The 29th Conference on

Origin
The origins of the Taiwan Bacteriology Conference date back to 1996, when it was initiated by Professor Shih-Tung Liu of Chang Gung University, Professor Jiunn-Jong Wu of National Cheng Kung University, and Professor Ban-Yang Chang of National Chung Hsing University. The primary goal was to promote communication and collaboration among researchers in the field of bacteriology across Taiwan. At the time, in support of a thematic research program funded by the National Science Council, Professor Liu invited several laboratory principal investigators to organize regular meetings—providing a platform for researchers,
postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to share their latest findings, discuss technical challenges, and foster collaboration.
The first conference, hosted by Professor Ban-Yang Chang at National Chung Hsing University, was modest in scale, involving only six laboratories and fewer than fifty participants. It was originally titled the “Bacillus subtilis Symposium.” As the number of participating laboratories increased and the scope of research expanded, the event was renamed the “Bacillus Conference,” and eventually became the “Bacteriology Conference,” reflecting its broader focus on both non-pathogenic and pathogenic bacterial research.
Unlike typical large-scale academic meetings, this conference places special emphasis on student interaction and the exchange of experience among faculty members. The program includes oral presentations, poster sessions, and experience-sharing by laboratory leaders, offering a multi-layered academic platform. Additionally, the conference features a half-day outdoor activity designed to strengthen connections and encourage collaboration among students and faculty from different institutions.
Today, the Taiwan Bacteriology Conference has become a major annual event in the country’s bacteriology community. It not only brings together domestic research efforts but also continues to attract young scholars to the field, playing a vital role in advancing
bacteriological research in Taiwan and fostering international engagement.
